Reading Strategies
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more
places you will go - Dr Seuss

Why
The ability to read and comprehend is so important for learning; however, not all students
are confident readers.

What
Classroom reading strategies are ways that teachers can improve the reading confidence of all students,
encourage more students to engage with texts in a meaningful way and to receive feedback on whether
students have learnt what was intended through reading a text.

How

-
Consider reading processes - what you do to support students before, during and after a reading event

-
Give students a purpose for reading

-
Consider what words may be unfamiliar and introduce these prior to reading

-
Let students know in advance what information they need to extract from the text

- Discuss how you access information from text - share your metacognitive strategies

- Explicitly teach reading strategies (skimming, scanning, consulting a reference, summarising)

- Consider how any text you use is constructed to suit a purpose and guide students to navigate this
